(Gray Louisiana) - Hurricane Erin is moving northwest in the Atlantic, prompting storm surge and tropical storm warnings for parts of the North Carolina Outer Banks. At the same time, forecasters are keeping an eye on two other tropical waves that could develop later this week.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 19), Erin was packing maximum sustained winds of 105 mph while located about 690 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The hurricane is moving northwest at 9 mph and is expected to track northward before curving out into the Atlantic later this week.

The National Hurricane Center says storm surge warnings are in effect from Cape Lookout to Duck, N.C., where water levels could rise 2 to 4 feet.
