A Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) lieutenant put his training to the test when helped a couple welcome their baby into the world last week.

A CFD officials said that the parents-to-be were on their way to the hospital on Thursday at around 1:00am when the mother gave birth to a baby girl on I-75.

The couple ended up meeting Lt. Alexander Efiom at a gas station on Gunbarrel Road where he helped the mother and baby Emma Lucille.

Lt. Efiom made sure that the Emma’s airway was clear and checked their vital signs until Hamilton County EMS arrived to take them to a hospital.

CFD officials said just hours before, during his same 24-hour shift, Lt. Efiom and his crew attended an OB class on assisting with the delivery of newborns that was taught by Erlanger.
