CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - As the school year approaches in Western Massachusetts, families are facing higher back-to-school shopping costs.

The National Retail Federation reports that expected spending for K-12 students has risen to nearly $40 billion this year, up from $33.9 billion in 2020.

For college students, the expected spending is projected to reach just below $89 billion in 2025, a significant increase from $67.7 billion in 2020.

To manage these rising costs, families are encouraged to look for supplies at home, opt for durable items, and take advantage of back-to-school sales and student discounts.

Major retailers may offer price matching, and purchasing used or refurbished items, particularly for electronics and shoes, can also help save money.
