CANTON, Ohio (WJW) -- A woman was arrested after her brand-new puppy died from being left in a hot car last month, the Stark County Sheriff's Office reported.

Tawanna Cox, a 49-year-old from Canton, has been charged with cruelty to animals and falsification, according to court records.

Hartville police said Cox left the 6-to-8-week-old puppy in her vehicle while she went shopping at a thrift store for over an hour on July 28. A criminal complaint said the dog did not have access to water, ventilation or proper air conditioning during that time.

Temperatures that day reportedly reached 90 degrees.
