COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — Tuesday was a day to remember for Albert DeSilva.
The World War II veteran celebrated his 106th birthday at Brookdale Centre of New England in Coventry.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Aug. 8, 1919, DeSilva served in the U.S. Army, unlike his four brothers who served in the U.S. Navy.
He was presented Tuesday with a letter from Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos, as well as certificates from Rep. Seth Magaziner and Sen. Jack Reed. He was also given a service flag from Harmony Hospice.
Despite being 106, DeSilva still enjoys computer games and playing BINGO.
He spends most of his time either in the community dining room for meals or in the courtyard, where he enjoys the sunshine and reads the newspaper.
