CLINTON COUNTY, Ill. — A billboard promoting a far-right extremist group was taken down on Tuesday after popping up last week across the street from a high school in Illinois.

Brad Knolhoff, Clinton County board chairman, said it came down Tuesday afternoon.

"I understand it will not be going back up," Knolhoff said.

The advertisement encouraged people to join the Proud Boys, a self-described group of "Western chauvinists," and prompted dozens to complain at a Clinton County board meeting Monday night — in addition to hundreds of online comments decrying the ad.

The sign was on private property just off Old U.S. Highway 50 across from Breese Central Community High School, about 40 miles east of St. Louis.
