Imoved to Duluth last year for its unmatched outdoor recreation. Hiking and biking trails at my doorstep, the lake, and countless waterfalls make this place special. On the surface, Duluth feels like the perfect home.

But beyond tourist hubs like Canal Park and Harbor Plaza, the picture changes.

Duluth invests heavily in attracting visitors, yet residents face infrastructure that feels neglected and unsafe. Roads riddled with potholes and patchwork make cycling jarring and dangerous. The Lakewalk is smooth near Canal Park but rough elsewhere. Bike lanes are scarce, protected lanes even scarcer — and when they exist, they’re not well maintained. This past winter, snow mounds made the protected lane on Superior Street unusable.
