INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) said more than 10 babies have died as a result of unsafe sleeping conditions in August. That’s more than double what they said is the average of about two deaths per week.

They said a blanket, pillow or even another person can be the difference between life and death for a sleeping infant.

”When a child dies, it is probably one of the most devastating losses that can occur,” Certified Grief Recovery Specialist Lillian Price-Maze said.

IDOH said suffocation caused by sleeping environments is the third leading cause of death for all Indiana infants. That suffocation can be caused by loose bedding, when a baby is lying on their stomach or when sleeping on top or alongside another person.
