TAOS — Taos County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two men Sunday in connection with the death of their roommate, 25-year-old Matthew McLaughlin, an Army veteran who had moved to the area from Virginia earlier this year.

The men are accused of fatally shooting McLaughlin and then disposing parts of his body at several sites near Tres Piedras. McLaughlin was last seen July 26.

Sheriff Steve Miera alleged Rainor Joiner, 23, admitted to shooting McLaughlin during a law enforcement search Sunday of the home the two had shared with another roommate, David Degroat, 22, whom Joiner also implicated in the crime.

“Joiner admitted to shooting McLaughlin, and with the help of Degroat, dismembering him and disposing of the body parts at several locations along U.S. 64 near Tres Piedras,” Miera said in
