Convicted killer Kayle Bates was executed at 6:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday by lethal injection at Florida State Prison, where he was put to death for the 1982 murder of Janet Renee White. The execution, a new state record, marks the 10th death sentence carried out in Florida this year.

Bates’s execution moved forward after the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a series of last-ditch appeals filed by his attorneys. Bates, 67, had been convicted and sentenced to death in 1983 for the brutal killing.
