ELKHORN, Wis. (WMTV) - Trial dates were pushed back Tuesday for the man accused of killing a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student, court records show.

Chad Richards appeared over video in Walworth County Court for a status conference.

The trial, which was originally set to begin in December, is now scheduled to begin in June 9, 2026.

Online court records show the family of victim Kara Welsh was in court Tuesday, and expressed frustrations with the state crime lab and processing of evidence.

The Walworth Co. court records stated an email from the crime lab said the lab portion of analysis will be completed Tuesday, but a draft of the report and peer review would take a couple weeks to finish.
