DETROIT -- Veteran starting pitcher José Urquidy is one step closer to Detroit.
The right-hander’s rehab assignment will move to Triple-A Toledo this week. He is scheduled to start for the Mud Hens on Wednesday.
Urquidy has made four short appearances at Class A Lakeland. While he’s pitched well, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said it has been difficult for him to build volume because of how aggressively young hitters swing. The jump to Triple-A should provide a more refined test.
“This will be a good test for him. He felt great and he’s ready to go,” Hinch said.
Urquidy, 30, signed with the Tigers during spring training . His deal includes a $1 million salary for 2025 and a $4 million club option for 2026, with up to $3 million in performance bonuses.
