ATLANTA — As Georgians face rising costs at the gas pump and grocery store, state lawmakers are considering a bold proposal to phase out the state income tax and put more money back into residents’ pockets.

“Right now the state of Georgia has the second highest income tax. Only South Carolina has a higher state income tax than we do right now, and they are moving toward lowering theirs,” Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones said during a Senate study committee meeting Tuesday.

The committee, led by Jones, met to discuss a plan that could completely eliminate Georgia’s income tax. Senator Blake Tillery of Vidalia, who chairs the committee, said this will help alleviate pressure on families juggling expenses for gas, groceries and childcare.
