ANDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — After decades of sitting empty, the American Nuclear Corporation site in Anderson County has been cleaned up.

"American Nuclear Corp. was started roughly in 1962. It was originally designed to provide medical isotopes and some plastic-type manufacturing. To take nuclear waste and try to develop a new business with it," said Tracy Wandell, Anderson County Commissioner for District 1.

After the plant closed down just a few years after opening, a new problem surfaced. The site was leaking radioactive waste into the surrounding area.

"There's cesium and cobalt, which are very bad actors in the world and that's what perpetuated this superfund clean up designation," said Wandell.
