A Detroit area superintendent is one of three finalists for the top education job in the state and includes an out-of-state finalist for the first time in two decades.

Glenn Maleyko, superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools, is one of the three finalists for state superintendent. The others are Lisa Coons, the former Virginia state superintendent of public instruction, and Judy Walton, the superintendent and curriculum director for Harrison Community Schools in Clare County. This marks the first time since 2005 that the State Board of Education has considered an out-of-state candidate as a finalist.

The State Board of Education narrowed the field from seven candidates to three on Tuesday after two days of interviews. The final interviews are scheduled for Aug. 26.
