A new cell-phone policy will be implemented for the new academic school year in Baltimore County.

The policy is called “Off and Away.” BCPS Superintendent Myriam Rogers said it was time to go system wide following last year’s successful pilot program.

“We learned that having the phones not far away from the students where they could get to them if there was an emergency and build in certain times for appropriate phone use was a win-win,” Rogers said.

Elementary and middle school students will not be allowed to use their phones during the day. High school students can only use them at certain times.

Rogers said students were more engaged with one another and their teachers during the pilot program.
