“We’ve got a westward-blowing breeze, so we’re getting in on some pretty good waves,” said a local surfer.
Hurricane Erin may be far offshore, but its winds are already making waves stronger and tides higher than normal. This has limited beach driving and forced lifeguards to get creative with patrols.
“A lot of times, if we have a higher-than-normal tide and can’t get a truck to certain areas, we patrol on a Jet Ski. It makes water rescues easier. We do have a boat we can deploy as well,” said Tammy Malphurs with Volusia Beach Safety.
