Los Angeles Unified School District officials said Tuesday the district will take steps to protect students and staff from soaring temperatures expected during a heat wave set to back much of the region for the rest of the week.

The district noted that many areas are likely to see near-record temperatures during the heat wave.

Protective measures being implemented by the district include:

— modification of scheduled for recess and lunch to minimize outdoor exposure;

— rescheduling or modifying schedules for high school athletic events and outdoor clubs;

— ensuring air conditioners are functioning, and preparing portable units if needed;

— relocating students to cooler spaces if air conditioners fail in classrooms;

— closing doors and windows to maintain cooler temperatures;
