As wisps of smoke still rose from the Wesley Ridge wildfire Tuesday, most property owners in the Little Qualicum River Estates have returned home after the evacuation order was lifted over the weekend.

“I expected the worst-case scenario, considering it’s all wood up here and wood burns,” said Clay Denton.

Denton is a long-time property owner on Wallace Wood Way who built and until recently owned the well-known red roof house perched on the side of the mountain.

He now owns property just up the road and went back today to see it for himself.

“Yeah, I probably would have cried if I saw that go up in smoke, yeah, I’ve got lots of good memories in that house,” Denton told CHEK News.
