WASHINGTON -- It’s not just that David Peterson is pitching deep into games for the Mets. It’s that he’s the only one doing it.

Peterson completed eight innings Tuesday in an 8-1 win over the Nationals , proving once again that when the Mets need length, he’s their only realistic option. The left-hander has now pitched into the eighth five times this season. No other Mets starter has done it even once.

Through five innings, Peterson was mostly perfect, allowing one baserunner but erasing him on a double play. He ran into (relatively) more trouble in the back half of the game, but by that point, the Mets were comfortably ahead thanks to homers from Mark Vientos, Juan Soto and Brett Baty, as well as run-scoring hits from Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil.
