ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Atlanta Regional Commission is now studying the potential of moving Atlanta’s Amtrak station to the downtown core.

“This is a great moment for us to capitalize on development that’s happening in downtown, and this is us building the future,” said Tejas Kotak, Principal Transportation Planner for the Atlanta Regional Commission.

The existing facility along Peachtree Street in Buckhead has shown low ridership and is disconnected to economic opportunities and other transit options.

The closest MARTA heavy rail station is the Arts Center, nearly a mile away.

In 2024 , Amtrak’s Atlanta station saw a total of 78,265 riders get on and off at its Peachtree hub. That is about the size of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, what has a seating capacity of 71,000.
