ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The UNM football team is coming into form ahead of the 2025 season. On Sunday, Idaho transfer Jack Layne was named the team's starting quarterback. on Tuesday, the team named six captains.

Captains • Jack Layne, quarterback - A transfer from Idaho who will lead the Lobos offense under center. • Richard Pearce, offensive line - The lone returning starter on the offensive line. • Gabe Lopez, defensive line - A third year player at UNM who will start at the JACK position. • Keyshawn James-Newby, defensive line - An FCS All-American transfer from Idaho who will start at the JACK position. • Austin Brawley, safety - A transfer from Ohio who will lead the secondary. • Jaxton Eck, linebacker - An All-Conference transfer from Idaho.
