A CNN host slammed President Donald Trump on Tuesday for his remarks about America's history of slavery.

Earlier in the day, Trump said his administration was reviewing the content at the Smithsonian Museum because it focuses too much on "how bad slavery was." Trump added that the museum should focus instead on curations that "celebrate American exceptionalism."

"The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

CNN's Abby Phillip responded to Trump's claims in her opening monologue on "NewsNight with Abby Phillip."

"True history should include everything," Phillip said. "Yes, the evils and the horrors, too. Museums are supposed to be places that protect those stories, the images, the lessons. The very things that inform so much of our current state of our republic. No matter how painful, or in the president's words, how horrible the lesson."

Trump previously celebrated the material in the Smithsonian after he toured it in 2017. However, his tune has changed in his second term. Trump and his allies have consistently defended his review of materials at the Smithsonian, arguing that American history should only celebrate accomplishments.
