NEW YORK, NY

A totally normal carton of eggs sold for a record $80 million plus buyer’s premium in a Sotheby’s auction this week, smashing the previous record of $4.50.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said auctioneer Johan Kraybill. “People were calling in from all over the country. The price of that carton of eggs just kept getting higher and higher. It was a bidding frenzy.”

The anonymous seller purchased the dozen eggs at her local Safeway store just a couple weeks ago and in that time the demand for the product has led to jaw-dropping auction prices.

“Some were worried the eggs would expire by the time they made it to the buyer,” said Kraybill. “Luckily, the price also included helicopter service, which rushed the carton over to the seller in time to make an omelette.”
