Four years after Rob Gronkowski donated a giant check for the renovation of a Boston playground, the retired New England Patriots star is returning to celebrate the grand opening.

"The day is here, and it's a day to celebrate," he said at the event.

Gronk Playground, a full renovation of the former Charlesbank Playground located in the Charles River Reservation Esplanade, is the result of a $2 million project. It incorporates football-themed elements, scaled-down Boston landmarks and inspirational quotes from Boston athletes.

Before the renovation, the Charlesbank Playground was the oldest of the three located along the Esplanade.
