David Byrne has subtly revealed that he's engaged to businesswoman Mala Gaonkar. The Talking Heads frontman subtly revealed their relationship status by referring to the writer and hedge fund manager as his "fiancée" during a recent interview with The Times. Discussing his upcoming album, Who Is The Sky?, and the inspiration behind the track, Moisturizing Thing, the Burning Down the House singer let his news slip. "My fiancée will sometimes come at me with greasy hands, ready to smear my face. And at one point I thought, 'What if I wake up and really looked younger?'" the musician explained. "But there's a message, too. About how people judge us by the way we look. You learn a lesson you didn't expect at the start." According to the publication, Byrne, 73, and Gaonkar, 55, live together in New York. The singer previously collaborated with Gaonkar on an immersive theatre performance for the Stanford Arts Institute in 2016, and again on another theatrical experience in Denver, Colorado in 2022. The couple have been photographed together at several red carpet events over the past three years, but it is unclear when their relationship began. Byrne was previously married to artist and designer Adelle Lutz between 1987 and 2004, and they share an adult daughter named Malu. Meanwhile, Gaonkar has two sons with her businessman ex-husband Oliver Haarmann.
