HMRC has offered advice after a customer received an unexpected message. The individual reached out to HMRC after receiving a text message containing an access code, despite not attempting to access their account.

The concerned customer asked: "Does this mean my account has been compromised or was it sent in error?" In response, HMRC suggested that the message could be due to someone entering incorrect digits. However, they also issued further guidance to ensure the person's account security, advising: "For security reasons, avoid clicking on any links or responding."

They added: "You can log into your account separately and check your account, review security settings and change password for added security if you wish."
