New emission-based parking charges are now in force across the city — with the cost of some permits rising by hundreds.

Residents of neighbourhoods in the west end and city centre were previously charged different rates to park depending on their address, with a charge of £98 per year in most of the city, and £325 in the city centre.

But drivers will now be charged according to how polluting their vehicle is, with drivers of the dirtiest vehicles faced with a charge of up to £220 per year. The changes came into effect on Tuesday (August 19).

Drivers of electric and some hybrid cars will pay a slightly reduced rate of £80 per year. The vast majority of drivers will be paying more, with drivers of vehicles producing between 51 and 150g of CO2 per kilometre paying £150 a year.
