GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro man had a life-changing trip to the grocery store recently.
Rudolph Ruggiero Jr. bought a $1 Quick Pick ticket for the Cash 5 drawing for August 13 at the Harris Teeter on Battleground Avenue.
Ruggiero received a message telling him to go to the lottery claim center in Greensboro, and that's when he found out he won the $435,915 jackpot prize.
“(The lottery employee) said, ‘You’re a very lucky man,’” Ruggiero recalled. “I couldn’t believe it. I was shaking.”
Ruggiero claimed his prize Tuesday in Raleigh and took home $312,770 after required federal and state tax withholdings.
Ruggiero, who has been an electrician for over 50 years, told lottery officials he plans to put his winnings in the bank and save for retirement.
