President Donald Trump fired off Wednesday against “windmills” and “solar” as being the “scam of the century” following reports of skyrocketing energy prices, reports that have left at least one Trump administration official worried about the upcoming midterm elections.
“Any state that has built and relied on windmills and solar for power are seeing record-breaking increases in electricity and energy costs,” Trump wrote in an online post on his social media platform Truth Social. “The scam of the century! We will not approve wind or farmer-destroying solar. The days of stupidity are over in the USA!”
Energy costs have, in fact, surged in recent months, with electricity prices averaging 5.5% higher in July when compared to the same month last year. However, states with a higher reliance on renewable energy sources like wind and solar have actually seen energy costs rise slower than the rate of inflation, according to a report from Energy Innovation, a nonpartisan energy policy firm.
Trump’s latest tirade against wind and solar also comes in the wake of comments from Chris Wright, Trump’s energy secretary and former oil tycoon, expressing fears that the surging energy costs could prove an electoral liability for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.
“The momentum of the Obama-Biden policies, for sure, that destruction is going to continue in the coming years,” Wright told Politico, the outlet reported on Tuesday. “That momentum is pushing prices up right now. And who’s going to get blamed for it? We’re going to get blamed because we’re in office.”
Trump’s complaints about wind and solar have been varied, having called windmills in particular “ugly,” “harmful” and a “con job.” He’s also expressed fears that windmills are dangerous to animals, raging that they will “kill all your birds.”
