A fatal crash involving two vehicles was reported to the Polk County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 7:35 p.m., according to a news release from the department. The crash occurred in Elkhart at the intersection of Northeast 29th Street and Northeast 142nd Avenue.

Polk County deputies who arrived on scene found an adult male and an adult female had been ejected from the first vehicle. The male was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where she later died, the release said.

The driver of the second vehicle, an adult male, was also taken to a hospital via ambulance to treat injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The cause of the crash is unknown and remains under investigation.
