One Maryvale High School student died and another was injured as a result of a stabbing incident on Tuesday.

About 11 a.m., Phoenix police officers responded to the school after an apparent fight between students.

The school is located at 3415 N. 59th Ave., Phoenix.

On Tuesday afternoon, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne announced via a press release one of the students had died.

“The death of a student as the result of a stabbing at Maryvale High School is a terrible tragedy. Schools must be safe places," said Tom Horne, state superintendent of public instruction in a statement.
