A boy died following a Monday collision as he was walking in front of his mother near 36 th Street and McDowell Road, police said Tuesday.

The collision occurred just after 8 p.m. Aug. 18 near 36th Street and McDowell Road where officers found the boy in critical condition. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Detectives from the Phoenix Police Department Vehicular Crimes Unit processed the scene where the woman driving the vehicle remained, according to a release.

Preliminary information indicates the boy “was walking slightly ahead of his mother southbound in the crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle,” the release stated.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor, and police said an investigation is underway.
