ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Opening statements began Wednesday in the retrial of a former state trooper, since elected mayor of a small west Georgia city, on charges of vehicular homicide.

A.J. Scott, mayor of Buchanan, Georgia , is facing two counts of vehicular homicide in the second degree and reckless driving. Those charges and others stem from a September 2015 crash from his time as a trooper that claimed the lives of two teenagers and injured two others.

Prosecutors said Scott was traveling more than 90 mph in a 45 mph Carroll County speed zone without lights or sirens. He allegedly broadsided a vehicle carrying four passengers. Two of them - Kylie Lindsey and Isabella Chinchilla - died in the crash.

Scott was subsequently fired from the Georgia State Patrol.
