COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) -- State Rep. Chris Murphy (R-Dorchester) is retiring after serving in the South Carolina House for more than a decade, according to a letter obtained from the House Speaker's Office.

Murphy, who was elected in 2010 to represent District 98, wrote in the Aug. 20 letter that he would resign his seat, effective Jan. 5, 2026.

"I am deeply grateful to my constituents for their trust and support over the years," he wrote. "While this decision is bittersweet, my retirement will allow me to spend more time with my loved ones and to focus on my work outside of public office."

Murphy worked as a prosecutor in the 1st Judicial Circuit, as a special assistant U.S. Attorney, and served on the Dorchester County Council prior to his election to the House. He won reelection last
