SUMMERVILLE — State Rep. Chris Murphy is abruptly resigning, House Speaker Murrell Smith's office confirmed.
In a letter shared Aug. 20 with the media, Murphy said he is leaving office to spend more time with his family and focus on his career. He has represented his suburban Summerville-area district since 2010.
"While this decision is bittersweet, my retirement will allow me to spend more time with my loved ones and focus on my work outside of public office," the letter read.
He is the fifth member of the South Carolina legislature this year to resign or announce their resignation. He will leave office Jan. 26.
