The Mount Underwood Wildfire, that has been burning south of Port Alberni since August 11, is no longer considered as being ‘out of control’.
Shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday night, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) changed the status of the wildfire to ‘being held’. The blaze is still listed as a ‘wildfire of note.’
The size of the fire has also been updated to being 3,548 hectares in size, 55 hectares down from its previous estimate earlier Wednesday.
On its response page to the Mount Underwood fire, BCWS says “On the East flank, firefighters have now gained access and are extending containment along the perimeter. In southern sections of the fire, rappel crews have established access and crews are patrolling a 100-foot zone to extinguish hotspots.”
