The FBI is investigating the death of Donald Maier, a prisoner who died at Waupun Correctional Institution in early 2024, according to an attorney for Maier's family and documents received by prison employees.

Maier, 62, died due to probable malnutrition and dehydration on Feb. 22, 2024 , one week after prison staff began intermittently shutting off the water to prevent him from flooding his cell. His death was ruled a homicide .

Civil rights attorney Jeff Scott Olson, who represents Maier's family, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Aug. 20 that the FBI has been looking into Maier's case for months.
