Lawyers for the Alberta government suggest in a new court filing that former Alberta Health Services (AHS) head Athana Mentzelopolous may have broken her contract by secretly recording conversations with the provincial health minister and AHS staff, while her lawyers assert her actions were legal and justified to shield off political interference.
In February , Mentzelopolous filed a $1.7-million wrongful dismissal suit against the government and AHS. The month before, she was fired without cause and in her view, without proper authority, after she launched an investigation into allegations of impropriety in AHS processes around procurement and awarding of private surgical contracts.
