PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — While Hurricane Erin isn't expected to directly hit Southern New England, strong winds and dangerous waves have already caused some beaches to close and ferry services to be disrupted.

According to the 12 News weather team, the roughest surf and rip currents are forecasted Thursday and Friday.

While parking lots are still open, the Rhode Island DEM said there is currently no swimming allowed at state beaches and people should expect restrictions through Saturday.

Easton's Beach in Newport will be closed Thursday and reopens only once the storm passes and necessary cleanup is complete, police said. Entrance gates will lock Wednesday at 9 p.m. and parking will be blocked.
