A box jellyfish alert has been issued for Waikiki beaches on the south side of Oahu, while a shark alert remains in effect for Waimea Bay on the north side, this morning.

Honolulu officials at 9:50 a.m. issued an HNL Alert for sharks on Oahu’s north side after a non-aggressive, 6- to 7-foot tiger shark was observed about 150 yards out in the middle of Waimea Bay.

On Oahu’s south side, meanwhile, box jellyfish have been observed both in the water and along the shoreline of Waikiki.

The box jellyfish, also known as box jellies, can leave painful stings upon contact.

Signs have been posted for both the shark and jellyfish.
