DOVER, Vt. (WCAX) - A Vermont man who sparked a multistate manhunt has been captured.

The Windsor County Sheriff says Mason Payne, 23, has been arrested in Stamford, Connecticut.

Police in three states and federal law enforcement were on the hunt for Payne after Dover police put out a “be on the lookout” for him, following an alleged assault Tuesday evening.

They warned that Payne may be armed with a rifle, wearing body armor and had made threats to harm law enforcement.

The Windsor County Sheriff’s Department tried to apprehend Payne at his home in Weathersfield, Vermont, but police said he fled the area in a black Audi A3 before they arrived.

Hours later, at about 10 p.m., troopers in Massachusetts spotted the black Audi with a temporary Vermont plate on Interstate 91 in Holyoke.
