ESSEX, Vt. (WCAX) - If you haven’t seen it already, your property tax bill should hit your mailbox soon.
On average, statewide, they’re expected to increase a percentage point-- a big change from last year’s double-digit hike. But it still could be years until Vermont lawmakers achieve real tax relief.
Homeowners across the Green Mountain State are opening their tax bills.
“I thought we were going to have to pay so much this year because of my husband’s health insurance. But next year, I’m hoping we don’t have to,” said Katherine Ogelby of Essex Junction.
“Vermonters have never had a democratic say in how much is spent in K-12 education,” said Robert Letovsky of Colchester.
Despite high rates, some see the value in supporting schools and paying taxes.
