JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (Edited News Release/KY3) - The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services confirmed the death of a patient after showing symptoms of a rare brain infection.

Health officials say he got sick after skiing at the Lake of the Ozarks.

The infection is extremely rare. The Centers for Disease Control reports there have only been 167 confirmed cases since 1962. Dr. Christian Rojas Moreno, an Infectious Disease Specialist at the University of Missouri Healthcare, said anytime someone swims in freshwater, they could encounter it. Still, only a minor percentage ever get severely ill.

The amoeba can appear in any warm, fresh water, including lakes, streams, rivers, and under chlorinated pools. Swimmers can contract the amoeba through their nose and may start experiencing
