Residents at the Crossing Apartments, where last week's historic rainfall displaced at least 30 households, have insisted that nearby Black Branch Creek could be behind the devastating flooding. But "cleaning out the creek" isn't so simple, Fort Oglethorpe leaders tell Local 3.

“There tends to be sometimes a misconception that we have to clean out the creek or that homeowners have to clean out the creek," said Molly Huhn, Fort Oglethorpe's City Manager. "But really, the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) at the state level does not allow anybody to clean out the creek.”

Any mitigation projects would require permits and approval, before work could occur in the 25 or 50-foot protected buffer.
