In Beaver County, the nearly 100-year-old Montgomery Lock and Dam is being modernized with a new 600-foot auxiliary lock to improve the way goods move through one of the nation’s busiest inland river routes.

Led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the upgrade is part of the Upper Ohio Navigation Project, which involves rebuilding three aging lock and dam sites — Montgomery, Emsworth and Dashields. The $1.5 billion initiative’s goal is to better support the transportation of goods like steel, coal and construction materials, by increasing capacity and reducing delays through the waterways system.
