RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Students are back in school, which means speed cameras are back in action, too. Richmond police have seen an increase in numbers in 2025, and hope drivers take this new start as a time to slow down.

“I think in the summertime people kind of forget that the congestion that can happen in the schools. So we’re seeing a lot of people, some are slightly impatient,“ Sergeant Travis Thompson, with the Richmond Police Department, said.

The number of tickets from January to July 1, 2025 is already more than double the amount issued in 2024.

Tickets started going out March, 2024, and there were fewer cameras in the first year of the initiative, which are factors in the drastic jump.
