It stood for 115 years, but the two-story Prairie School-styled home at 102 S. Sergeant Ave. was clawed down Wednesday by an excavator until it lay on the ground in pieces.

Mary Anne Phillips, a resident and historian in Joplin's Murphysburg Historic District where the house is located, said that although Murphysburg tries to preserve its historic houses, this one had to be demolished because of what she described as "its extreme deterioration. ×
