B.C. conservation officers are reminding the public to be aware so you don’t scare the bears.
A woman was attacked by a black bear Tuesday morning in Pemberton after startling a bear while out for a walk. Around 7 a.m., the woman was walking with her dog off-leash on her rural property, when she came upon a bear in an area of tall grass. The bear bit and scratched the woman, but disengaged.
The woman received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, and her dog was uninjured. The bear was gone when conservation officers arrived on scene.
The investigation determined the attack was defensive in nature, as the bear was likely scared by the pair in a surprise encounter in tall grass and brush. There were no reports of aggressive bear behaviour in the area before the attack, and
