ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - It’s a rare look at a vital part of St. Louis that you rarely get to see, the 10 thousand mile maze of sewers below the city.

FirstAlert4 had an opportunity to visit a small chamber within that network, a section running under Forest Park.

Sean Stone, who works with the Metropolitan Sewer District’s Project Clear, took FirstAlert4’s Nathan Vickers into the tunnels, which are normally locked and off-limits to the public for safety reasons.

“You don’t want to come down here,” Stone cautioned. “It’s not safe. If there were a storm this would fill up in minutes.”

On Wednesday, the dry weather meant that the stormwater stream, which collects runoff from areas North and West of Forest Park, was only a trickle, offering a glimpse into the vast underground cave
